Fraternity Law Attorney in Cincinnati
I have extensive experience handling a wide range of legal issues faced by fraternities and sororities across Ohio and the United States. I have worked with educational institutions as well as represent national fraternities in cases involving allegations of fraternity hazing. I have considerable experience dealing with liability issues that arise from hazing and was referred to as a "hazing expert" by the New York Times in 2000, and again in 2008 by such national media outlets as MSNBC and USA Today. Representation and Consulting Regarding Hazing
In many instances, what constitutes hazing can be difficult to define, and often involves the use or consumption of alcohol. Hazing is not necessarily limited to physical acts, but can also involve psychological abuse or intimidation. Hazing can result in significant liability issues for the individuals, fraternal organizations and educational institutions involved, including:
- Underage drinking and dram shop issues
- Personal injury or even death
Educational institutions can also experience negative publicity when known hazing is ignored or disregarded, which can have an impact on campus life, fundraising and enrollment.
In my practice, I will represent and advise high schools, colleges, fraternities and individuals in cases involving allegations of hazing. I have handled litigation for a number of national fraternal organizations, including cases involving a hazing death in Missouri and a significant personal injury related to hazing in New York. With my former firm, I served as Associate Editor for Fraternal Law, a national newsletter dealing with fraternities and their host colleges and universities.
I can also provide proactive consulting services to educational institutions, including athletic department staffs at high schools and colleges, helping them establish and implement programs to prevent or minimize hazing before it occurs.
Other Fraternal Issues
I advise educational institutions and fraternities and sororities on a variety of other legal matters, including:
- Local chapter housing issues
- Membership issues
- Free speech issues
